A small company in Paris just won a US patent for a fizzy tablet meant to carry GLP-1 medicine through your stomach so you could swallow it instead of injecting it. While this is very far from being available to you at the pharmacy counter, it’s a new option being explored. It has not been tested in people yet, and there's no medicine you can ask for. Let’s look at what this news means, and why you shouldn’t get too excited about it in the news (yet).

Why GLP-1 medicine is usually a shot
Most GLP-1 medicines are peptides. A peptide is a short chain of building blocks called amino acids. Think of a string of beads.
Your gut is built to break those strings apart. That's how you digest a steak. Your stomach and intestines are full of enzymes, which act like tiny scissors that cut chains of amino acids into pieces. A peptide medicine swallowed as a normal pill would get cut up before it ever did anything.
There's a second problem. Even the pieces that survive are fairly big and don't cross the gut wall into your blood easily. So a shot skips the whole trip.

To get even that much, it uses a helper ingredient and comes with strict rules: take it on an empty stomach, with no more than 4 ounces of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks, or other pills.
Break the rules and you get less medicine. That's the tradeoff people live with today, though other oral GLP-1s (Foundayo) have worked out a way around this.
What the fizzy tablet is meant to do
The company is BioLife and it calls the technology OralMatrix. Its founder, Dr Farid Bennis, is the inventor, and the company is based in Paris (Drug Target Review). Note that this is not the same company as the US firm BioLife Solutions, which does something unrelated.
The tablet dissolves and fizzes, the same way an antacid tablet fizzes in a glass of water. That fizzing releases gas and changes the conditions right around the medicine. The company describes it as creating a gastric buffer, meaning a protected pocket in the stomach that shields the peptide on its way through and helps it get absorbed.
That's the idea. Whether it works well enough in a human body is the open question, and is sure to be the next thing the company works to prove (though they won’t start with humans just yet).

What the patent means, and what it doesn't
A patent is a legal document. It says the government agrees you invented something and gives you the right to stop others from copying it. It is not a test result, and it isn't permission to sell a medicine. Those come from a completely different process.
- What was granted: US Patent 12,667,605 B2, covering the delivery technology across six GLP-1 drugs including semaglutide, liraglutide, dulaglutide and exenatide, with protection running into 2042 (Drug Target Review).
- What the company reports: preclinical studies showing measurable semaglutide in the bloodstream after swallowing it. Preclinical means before any testing in people, usually in a lab or in animals.
- What is missing: no human trial of this technology is registered, and the preclinical results have not been published in a scientific journal for others to check. Everything known about the results comes from the company.
The company says this plainly in its own announcement: "The technology is in development and is not approved for the treatment of any disease" (company announcement).
For a sense of odds, industry figures put the chance of a drug that has already reached the first stage of human testing eventually getting approved at roughly 1 in 10 (Biotechnology Innovation Organization). This one hasn't reached human testing at all. Most ideas at this stage don't become medicines, and the ones that do usually take many years.
Why it would matter if it worked
Three reasons, and they're all about getting medicine to more people.
- Making pills is easier than making shots. Injectable medicine has to be made sterile and filled into pens in special facilities. Tablets can be made on ordinary equipment.
- No refrigerator. Injectable GLP-1 pens need cold storage before use. Tablets sit in a cupboard, which matters for shipping and for anyone without reliable refrigeration.
- Some people won't inject. For them a pill isn't a convenience, it's the difference between treatment and none.
There's already a pill that sidesteps this problem in a different way. Foundayo, approved in April 2026, isn't a peptide at all. It's a small molecule, meaning a much smaller and tougher chemical that survives the gut on its own. Lilly describes it as the only GLP-1 pill for weight loss "that can be taken any time of the day without restrictions on food and water intake" (Eli Lilly). So the fizzy tablet isn't the only route to a pill. It's one attempt at a specific hard problem, which is swallowing a peptide.
